DR. SHARON HECKER (B.A. Yale University, cum laude, M.A. and Ph.D. University of California at Berkeley) is an art historian, curator, author, educator, and consultant. A leading international authority on modern and contemporary Italian art and the artist Medardo Rosso, she has authored over 30 publications, including A Moment’s Monument: Medardo Rosso and the International Origins of Modern Sculpture, awarded the Millard Meiss Publication Fund Prize from the College Art Association, and Postwar Italian Art History Today: Untying “the Knot”.

Dr. Hecker has curated numerous exhibitions at institutions including the Harvard University Art Museums, Pulitzer Arts Foundation, Nasher Sculpture Center, St. Louis Art Museum, and the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, London. Her work has received awards from the Getty, Mellon, and Fulbright Foundations.

Dr. Hecker writes about interactions between art-historical scholarship, the market, and the law, as related to questions of authenticity, attribution, expertise, and due diligence. She is Chair of the International Catalogue Raisonné Association (ICRA) and is Coordinator of the Expert Witness Pool for the Court of Arbitration for Art (CAfA).

Dr. Hecker has led workshops on due diligence for organizations such as the ADR Camera Arbitrale di Milano, Associazione Italiana Family Office (AIFO) Università Cattolica Master’s in Arts Management, 24Ore Business School Master Economia e Management dell’Arte e dei Beni Culturali, the Master’s in Art Law at the University of Milan , the University of Pavia Master’s in Gestione Innovativa dell’arte and the Luiss Guido Carli Art Law Master’s Program and at the SDA Università Bocconi Master’s Concentration in Art Markets and Finance. 

Dr. Hecker is available for consultations, lectures, and seminars on The Hecker Standard for due diligence. She also organizes and coordinates research teams to conduct due diligence.

WRITING

Sharon Hecker has published on modern and contemporary Italian art. Her writings on artists such as Medardo Rosso, Lucio Fontana, Luciano Fabro, Francesco Lo Savio, Giuseppe Penone and Marisa Merz appear in books, edited volumes, scholarly journals and exhibition catalogues.

She also writes on cultural heritage and issues surrounding due diligence, expertise, authenticity and attribution, seeking to promote greater dialogue between art history, the art market and art law.

CONSULTING

Sharon Hecker provides consulting on due diligence for artworks, working with private collectors, foundations and public institutions according to The Hecker Standard®.
